First day of class- EVER!

Auntie Reagan got Eli and Quincy a music and motion class for Christmas!  Each tot gets special Mommy time and the opportunity to be a shining star! Eli gets to start first since, well you know he got here first.   It was so fun.  We are learning to jump on dots, wiggle walk and generally be a ladies man! He is getting to be such a big boy and doesn't he look like his Daddy!

We have learned to tickle!

Eli and Quincy have learned about tickling!  It is about the most hilarious thing ever.  I can't imagine one of them with out the other. Tickle, tickle!  They will do what ever it takes to get to each other to tickle.  Q is not having a very good few days.  She has 4 teeth coming in.  2 molars and 2 canines.  Ugh! It is good to see even when you don't feel great her brother can still make her giggle, giggle with a tickle, tickle.

Cinderella and her partner in crime!

Sorry this isn't a great picture, but I was laughing so hard I couldn't stand it. This morning when we finished breakfast I got Eli and Quincy down to play with me in the kitchen. I guess they forgot to tell me we were going to play Cinderella and they were going to scrub the floors.

Wow- I guess they know how bad I hate to scrub floors.

Whose idea was it to get to one nap a day????

I know it is time for Eli and Quincy to be at one nap a day. I know that they are not sleeping during their first nap and that it throws the reast of the day off. I know they are ready for it. I know that they can do this! I don't know if I can! It might kill me!
Quincy was awake for 3 hours in the night. I don't know if it is her way of punishing me or if it was something else. We will see how tonight goes!

Update!

“When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child.”
— Sophia Loren
Today the babies had to have there monthly RSV shot. At 8 months Eli weighs 20 lbs straight up and Quincy weighs 16 lbs. Doctor says, I have a sinus infection on its way out. Why doesn't it feel that way???

Isn't this fun???

I think this is such a great way to display art work. My desk area would be perfect for a couple of hangers or maybe the panel door going downstairs. Now I just have to find the hangers...

Miss Quincy!

You are ready for hair bobbles. Some peoples thing is shoes, I think our thing is hats and hair bobbles. I can't wait for years of mermaid braids, do it yourself clips and running behind you to brush your hair. I promise to love every minute of it. I hope you can be patient when I am not!
I love you Quincy- mommy

Eli sits up on his own today!

Eli is a super stud today! He sat up today after his morning bottle. Josh is going to be out of town tomorrow and I gave the babies there bottle in bed. (Total treat!!!) Josh was trying to make sure he was all propped up and I said try it without and our boy could totally do it. He was so proud of himself!!! I can't believe how fast they are growing. I wouldn't let Josh try with Quincy! Looks like March is going to be a great month of changes!

A New Month...

February was an adventure at our house. Josh had 2 week long business trips. I am happy to say we survive and actually did quite well. Toward the end of the 2nd week I started to get pretty wiped out, but we did it!!! We are so lucky to
have so much family to help! I could not have done it without them.

Eli and Quincy are currently eating quite the variety of foods. Breakfast usually starts with either rice or oatmeal cereal, fruit and a bottle. They are eating bananas, apples, and pears.
Lunch is 2 veggies and a fruit with a bottle. Veggies we have started are sweet potatoes, squash, avocado, peas and green beans. I am amazed at how conflicting all the information is out there, so we are using a little bit of everything and what the babies are liking. This weekend I hope to make two new foods - peaches and carrots. Right now the grocery stores doesn't exactly have a wide variety of organic fresh produce!! Thank goodness we have Costco. I just wish we had a Trader Joes!
Oh- dinner is fruit, veggies, cereal and a bottle. (Balanced is my goal!)
Overall, making and freezing the food is quite easy. It takes a little time but I usually prepare what I am making during the day or while I am making dinner, let it cool and puree it the next morning. I haven't got quanities down quite yet, but I am getting better. I usually make about 30-35 servings of an ingredient at a time and that about a week for twins.
Green beans and peas were the most difficult to make because they had a kind of "shell" for lack of a better word. We are still trying to make them enjoyable. Right now, if you add them to squash or sweet potatoes they love them. Yes, sweet potoes and pears seem to be the favorite right now.
They have eaten a little jarred baby food, so that they would in a pinch, but other than that I have made everything. And it has been fun.

Daddy's home tonight!

Wow- it has been a long week. Josh has been gone on his last week long trip for a while. I am so blessed to have great help. I could not do it without my family. My Mom and Harper spent every night with me and Reagan and Koko stayed when they could. I think Harper and I got some quality "littles" time and it could not have been more special.
Last night we went out to dinner to celebrate Uncle Calvin's birthday! The babies did a great job at the resturant and then all the chicks and Eli came home for our last sleep over a little while.
Thanks Uncle Calvin for all your help! Eli especially appreciated your walking with him so he didn't have to be the only guy!

Happy Birthday Uncle Calvin!

We hope you have a great day and can't wait to celebrate with you!

Playdate!

Today was soo fun! We went on a playdate with one of our friends. We are happy to announce: we were on time! we did not have any large unrecoverable meltdowns. no one threw up and I had a blast!

Eli looked so cute I had to show a picture...

Today was a great day to be a mom!

Sigh.......

Naptime is going thru some evolutions right now. Q currently is having a little trouble going down for naps, but I decided to swaddle her again and she seems to quiet right down. They say if you go back to it, that it will sometimes help! I believe!!! She is quietly sleeping and I have my sanity! Sorry for the straight jacket Q, but it seems to give her so much comfort when she is really upset! We have not used the swaddling with her very much, but when she is upset! Thank goodness!
We will try again tomorrow!

Monday, February 16, 2009

Dad is sick!

Josh has a man cold. We are trying to not catch it!!! Think we are going on a walk and hanging out with Hunna and Auntie Reagan. We hope Eli will eat a good meal with his Auntie!

Quincy is rolling over!

Quincy has hit a milestone. She is rolling from her back to her stomach! She is so proud of herself, but we have hit one major problem. Once she gets on to her stomach, she doesn't know what to do. If it is during the day, she tells us what she has done and we go in and roll her back over. At night or nap time, it is a different story. This fun daytime activity can cause much stress. She gets MAD and lets you know about it with no uncertain terms. This picture I caught her today sleep with her hinny up in the air. I have been trying to calm her when she gets on her tummy to teach her it is a good place. Heck, it is how I sleep!

Homemade Baby Food

I have decided that I will make Eli and Quincy there babyfood. I like the idea of knowing exactly what is in it and I enjoy cooking so why not do it for my favorite people??? (I will keep cooking regular food for my other favorite person, Josh!)
I have found a couple of great websites that look pretty helpful! I will keep you posted!
Here are the sites:

Eli slept thru the night!!! I think we have turned a corner! I can't believe how awesome I feel with a full night sleep! We will celebrate today!

Mama Mia!

Today Eli cried the entire lenth of Mama Mia for his nap. Finally he slept! Hunna is a total stud! She was comforting and kind. Said she would do whatever I wanted, but encouraged me to let him cry it out! I go back and forth if this is the right thing to do, but he has to at least get good naps if he is not sleeping thru the night. I know he is not hungry and I am worried I have set a bad example with going to him when he crys when he should be sleeping. I am not sure who is being trained, him or me.

Holy cow! What an afternoon! I can’t believe this! We have to turn a corner soon! I can’t take a lot more!

Tonight I am planning to make wontons and eggrolls with the girls. I am really enjoying Chinese New Year! I need some fun!

Gung Hey Fat Choy! Part Two

Happy Chinese New Year!
Today we had a party in Harper’s class and were lucky enough to be invited! This is the year of the Ox and we made tails and horns.
Here is your lesson on the year of the Ox. According to the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of 2009 is the Year of the Ox. The Ox, or the Buffalo sign symbolizes prosperity through fortitude and hard work. ( I do wonder why we don’t say the Buffalo, it seems better to me! I don’t know why, but it does!) Those born under the influence of the Ox or Buffalo are fortunate to be stable and persevering. The typical Ox is a tolerant person with strong character. ( Hummm, I know some babies that are going to be born under the year of the ox and this sounds like them already!!!) Not many people could equal the resolution and fearlessness that the Ox exhibits when deciding to accomplish a task. Ox people work hard without complaints at work or at home. They know that they will succeed through hard work and sustained efforts, and do not believe in get-rich-quick schemes.
Tonight is our first night without Daddy! Pray Eli sleeps a little more. Mommy is in desperate need of a little rest! Thank goodness I have wonderful help!!!

Super Bowl

I can't even tell you who is playing in the Superbowl. I am so embarrassed! I do know it is not the Packers! The Grands have been here with Jennie, but they are leaving today. We are getting ready for an adventure, Josh is going to be gone for a week. We are a little nervous, but we are lucky enough to have my family coming to stay and help out! Hope they know what they are in for!
Q has started cereal and is a totally champ... She loves to eat! Wow! How fun is it to feed our little muchkin!

Happy Chinese New Year! Part One

Today is a party in Koko's class for Chinese New Year. The Twins and I were lucky enough to join! Thanks Koko! Lots of fun activities! They made Chinese Lanterns, had a taste sampling of different cuisines, maked red enveloped and did some worksheets with math in chinese. Wow! So fun!
A little about red envelopes or Hong Bao, they are like the Chinese wand of hope, and it often carries boundless blessings. The children were asked to write down the wish for the person that they will be giving their envelope to. The lucky red envelope with money inside is given out to signify good fortune and good energy, especially when the money notes are crisp new notes with fresh new "chi" energy. It is your deep hearts desire for them...
Koko gave Eli and Quincy a red envelope. The message read, " Eli and Quincy I hope you have as much food as you want and are the center of attention! Love- Koko."

That is a kind of love that can't be put into words. Koko- thank you for teaching me about love!

New Years Resolution

I started my resolutions with a few areas that I want to work on and decided there were some real specifics that I could add. Here goes:
-Creating daily routine for family and self... As the mother of twins, I need to be awake, showered and dressed by 8am. I feel better and can get more done it I accomplish that in the morning!
-Creating healthy nutritious meals and opportunities for exercise for myself and family...Cook at home more!I really like to cook, I just don't like to think things up. I am going to work from a menu and Josh has said he will try really hard to make suggestions.
-Finding free time for myself, reading or posting blogs...This is a little harder for everyone. Thank goodness I have such a supportive family and husband. Post more on the blog. I know I have said it before but we bought a new router and I think it is better. I can't stand not sharing pictures of the my precious gang.
Keeping our home clean, organized and beautiful... Every morning and evening empty sink and clean kitchen. Tired or not, I always feel better starting fresh.
Love my family to the fullest... I have had such get joy in the last few years, I need to remind myself daily to enjoy it.
Work on compassion: random acts and courtesies for others...Live the life I want to live. Be the person who says please and thank you. Act as an example for my children the kind of person I want them to be.
Cultivate rituals and traditions... still thinking through...
Make more time for friends... I have to be a planner. I do better with a plan and feel better. I want to schedule my next activity with my firneds when we get together. This will help me stay connected.

6 month birthdays

Dear Quincy and Eli-
You are 6 months old this week and I can’t believe how much in love with you both your daddy and I are. Heck, I can’t believe how in love the whole darn clan is… We all spend as much time with you as we can and truly appreciate all of the moments we have.
Eli- You think your mommy is really funny. You laugh and giggle at (or with) me all the time. You are so happy. We are working on weaning you from your ta-ta and swaddle. You are on your way to being an excellent sleeper. When you are crying and I approach, your face lights up! You are charming and love everyone. You are an excellent cuddlier. You are strong and healthy. No teeth yet, but lots of slopper. I love you to the moon!
Quincy- You are happy all the time. You are an excellent sleeper and you have a tenderness that melts my heart. You turn on the charm for strangers and they always love it. Often when your brother is crying I see you try to hold his hand. I hope that is true for you both all your life. You are strong and healthy. I love you to the moon!
Doctor on the 26th so we will see how you have grown.
I love you babies!

Happy 4 Months!

Dear Eli and Quincy,
Today you turn four months old this week and are having your first cold. We had planned to take you on your first plane ride to meet your Great Grammy Zimmerman and the Utah Zimmies but you are both under the weather and I am a chicken. Flying with two sick babies just doesn’t sound like a good idea, not to mention a sick Daddy! We will reschedule soon. It is very important for you to know all of the people who love you!
You are our greatest joy. I love your smiles! They make us melt. I think giggling will come soon! Hunna is some kind of baby charmer. She can always get smiles out of both of you and we love it.
Eli -you are the quintessential chubby baby. When you smile, it takes your whole body. You are easy going, cuddly and fun to be around. You don’t smile as much as your sister but it is every bit as captivating. Even with a cold you can muster up the most delicious smile. You don’t cry except when you want your ta-ta. You will go to anyone with pleasure, but there are times when I think you want your Mom or Dad. Koko loves to carry you. She is amazingly careful and good at it. Harper is the first to grab your ta-ta when you are sad.
Quincy- you are the inquisitor. You are dainty and petite but have a hardy spirit. You know what you want and are not afraid to tell us. You are cooing regularly and are a wiggler in bed. You no longer want to be swaddled, but when you are very upset it is a godsend. You are already trying to be one of the girls and hang out with the older chicks. You, Harper and Koko seem to be a trio. What awesome examples they will be for you!
You both like the bath, although I'm often too tired to give you one. You love going on walks and being outside. I can’t wait to do so much with you. You are both easy babies, I can’t help but brag on you and sometimes people get jealous! You are so lucky to have so much family that loves to be with you! The Grands have been here this month and Auntie Jac snuck a trip in too. I love seeing you both grow every single day.
I love you, mommy

Hello world!!!

Now that we have figured out pictures, there is no excuse! Here you go! Hope you enjoy!!!
Everyone makes such a big deal about babies rolling over. I know it is a developmental milestone, but what about spinning??? I think 180's are just as impressive. She is hilarious. Unless we put Eli on the left side she is a moving fool... I called Eli the roadblock and Hunna got really mad. She said I would damage his self esteem. I don't think I will, I think it is a big deal to stop her. Twins are awesome! I can't imagine one without the other. Life would be so dull...

The Real Story- Leia at battle with dalmation

Ok- this is too funny. FINALLY I think I have figured out the posting situation. Actually Josh had to make it work, I just bossed him around and told him what I thought. Who know's if I was even close.
Koko and Harper had a school carnival on Friday. Koko wanted to be Leia and I SEWED the costume! It is true. Even with twins I want to be super Auntie...
Harper didn't want me to make something for her this year, but next year she is stuck with my creation!!!

New Doctor- 3 Month Check Up

We have found an awesome new doctor!!! Our other doctor was not as accessible as I needed and now we have found the solution.
We have solved Quincy's reflux problem. G2 (Great Grandma Evans) and Hunna said it was the fomula, but the doctor kept telling me to leave them on it. Made a change and she is a new little girl! Doctor won Hunna's vote as soon as he said that I should do what he says until a grandmother tells me different. How is that for pressure...

Dear Eli & Quincy,
Today you are three months old. The time has flown and you have been fabulous babies. You eat, sleep and do your diaper thing but you have added smiling and kicking just in time to avoid being boring. You are incredibly alert, very interested in the world and are very smart and strong!
Eli you know the second your ta-ta falls out and Quincy I have never experienced such happiness as to come in and see your bright eyes patiently waiting for me to come get you!.

Eli -you love your swing. I was so afraid you were too little to use it, but the second I put you in it, you fell in love. You love to look at the fishes. You know the moment they stop moving and let us know. I think you are imagining all of the fishing trips you will go on in your life. The more serious fish driven trips with your Grandpa and the sweet, nature driven trips you will go on with your cousins. I think you learn many life lessons in those fishing trips just like your Daddy and I did when we were kids. It makes me smile to remember and smile to look forward.
Quincy- you are not quite as into the swing. You are smaller and I am still a little nervous to leave you in there much. I do see the purchase of a second swing in our future. You love to stretch. You can lay for hours kicking your legs. You are our wiggler.
We are getting into a nice routine and you are great sleepers. We have just survived your daddy's first business trip and we would never have made it without Hunna, Auntie Reagan and the girls. I am looking forward to some good sleep!

I love you both very much. mommy

PRODUCT ALERT!!! MUST SHARE!

I am always on the quest for a great concealor. I can't ever seem to take care of the issues that I see and I always worry about sun protection. Our new adventure has definitely amped needing to cover dark circle so I have continued my search and I have a ton if anyone needs some to try. This actually came in the mail to me as a sample for new Moms! IT IS AWESOME!!! Works for eyes, as a base and has spf 20. I just HAD to pass it on!

FYI- Babies slept 2 hour chunks last night!!! Yippee!!!

He's a big boy now!

Feed Eli from a big boy bottle for the first time tonight! Makes me happy and sad all at the same time.
By the way- it wasn't gas, he was starving!!! Mother of the year here!

First Trip to the Bookstore

Yesterday the babies and there cousins went to Barnes and Noble for the first time. One of the greatest gifts I hope to give the twins is a love of reading. We have quite a library already started, but you can never have enough books. The one rule I remember growing up was you could have any books you wanted. I want to do that for Eli and Quincy.
We received a very special book from a friend from Portland! It is called, When you Were Born, by Dianna Hutts Aston, illustrated by E.B. Lewis. It summed up how we felt about Eli and Quincy from the moment we saw them. Definitely going to be a favorite!!! Thanks Jana- we love it!

A boy can learn a lot from a dog: obedience, loyalty, and the importance of turning around three times before lying down.
Robert Benchley

The question is which dog will be the one to teach Eli??? Marley or Millie? I believe they will both teach him something. Millie will give him the spirit of a puppy and playfulness. Mow lawner and catching a tail. Marley will teach him patience and gentleness. You don't always have to be the first one out the door to get your business done!

One of the most obvious results of having a baby around the house is to turn two good people into complete idiots who probably wouldn't have been much worse than mere imbeciles without it.

What does that say about having twins??? We are a little tired today!

happy 1 month to you and you!

One month old today! I can’t believe our babies are one month old today. They went to the doctor on Friday and are doing awesome. Eli weighs 6 lbs 10 oz! He was circumcised and is healing nicely.
Miss Quincy weighs 6 lbs 4 oz. Our doctor is letting us move to 4 hour feedings and we are almost over house arrest!
Keeping up on blogging is a little rough! Actually- I got incredibly frustrated because I can’t seem to post pictures like I use to and so I am having to come up with a different way! I will do better blogging and figure something out with pictures. These babies are way too cute to not show them on the web.

First Doctor Visit!

Babies are doing great!! Both have gained weight just like we wanted! Eli is a whopping 5 lbs 10 oz and Quincy is close behind at 5 lbs 6 oz. Eli is measuring at 18 1/2 inches and Quincy is 18 3/4 inches. We are still on a 3 hour feeding schedule, but we will check there weight again next week and hopefully we can move to 4 hours.
Doctor is very nice. We were a little late getting there and everyone was very understanding. I think we have had our first, wow! this takes a lot to get out the door experience! Both Josh and I liked the doctor a ton. All our silly questions didn't seem to phase him.
Update- K looks marvelous!!! We have seen each other a few times and stay in contact via email and texting. Can't believe how awesome she looks for having twins 20 days ago. She is back to work and is going to take a vacation with her family!

It is finally here- the twins are coming home!

After 17 days in the NICU our babies are coming home today! I am excited, terrifed and can hardly wait all at once. We both slept in a little and got some chores around the house done. I think we have most everything we need, but until they are actually here, I don't think I will know for sure. More later. I can't seem to get straight thoughts down. Guess I am excited to have the babies at home!!!

How Could I Know!

How Could You Know?

As you lay sleeping far away as still as you could be...
How could you know the joy today this photo brings to me?

A few short weeks and you'll be mine, and "I" will soon be "We".
How could you know the love I feel? It's something you can't see.

So have sweet dreams, my precious babe. Sleep well and tenderly.
Some say that you're the lucky one. How could you know it's me?
--- Kris Laughlin

This a poem I found in reference to adopting a child from China. Different circumstance, different continent, same love! So frequently I have stared at the pictures we would get from the ultrasounds and have had the same feelings I had when I would stare at the referral pictures we recieved of Koko and Harper!!! It sums up how I have felt for the last 6 months.
A phase we heard so often while in China was what a lucky girl. I always thought it was about our girls, never in a million years did I think they would know my future and I would be that lucky girl!

Now that is crazy!!!

The twins get sooo tired so fast it is unbelievable. When I asked the nurse why they have so little energy she said there bottles are only 44 calories a piece. Now- that explains why everything takes so much energy and why we work so hard to make sure that they don't spend there reserve on anything but essentials.. Wow! They live on approx 500 calories a day!

Happy Birthday Auntie Jaclyn!

Quincy and Eli are so lucky this weekend. They are getting to meet a ton of family and more time with the birthday Auntie. The Grands, Auntie Jennie, Auntie Jaclyn and Uncle Jake will all be in town on and off this weekend! Auntie Jaclyn (and Grandma Rhonda) will be spending her whole weekend with the babies. I was sooo sure that the babies would come on Jac's birthday. Oh well, we are just glad they are here! Happy Birthday Jaclyn! The babies love you and are soo glad to see you!

food for thought

"Life is not the amount of breaths you take, it's the moments that take your breath away." Quincy and Eli have made me understand exactly what this means!

6 Days Old!!

I can’t believe our little wiggle bugs have been here for 6 days today! It feels like forever and like yesterday all in one swoop.
Summary of Wednesday-First twins were under bilirubin lights in two beds, then they moved them to co-bed together and finally- snuggle bugs were cold and moved back to separate isolates. The Idaho Falls Grands arrived and our dear friends from Pocatello (also grandparents to twin 3yr old girls) came for a visit. Have I said how awesome the NICU staff is??? They provide the babies with so much love and attention and me with so much knowledge and support. I have a hard time imagining parenting without them. Wednesday was a lot of chaos and love, so we tried to make Thursday a little less for them.
Thursday- Auntie Jaclyn made it in late and we went straight to the hospital for her to see. The night nurse was so sweet. She had the babies ready and the room set so we could all be together. What a celebration! Finally!
I will write more when I have time, but wanted all to know how special and loved those lilttle bugs are. Please continue all your loving thoughts to K our surrogate and her family. Every day I am more astounded by what she has done for us!
Finally- Hunna is a total trooper. She has been there almost as much as Josh and I have. I couldn’t do it without her. Last night, she even took infant CPR with us. Loads of love and thanks to my Mom!

My heart swells!

My sister Reagan, and her girls met Quincy and Eli tonight for the first time. Just as I expected lots and lots happy tears. Reagan and the girls have been there for us every step of the way. During our struggles with infertility, I would look at the girls and have hope. When I did not think I would ever be able to survive the pain, the girls would remind me there would be happy days again! I so clearly remember the day I met Koko and then two years later Harper. It is love at first sight. A joy that makes your heart swell. We will have so many adventures and good times. I finally feel at peace!
